A new rear panel is now available for all owners of previous versions of the
Mass-Storage 4x case. This panel allows a single Multi-Lane data cable to be
used for simpler connections up to six feet long. Another optional feature
with this panel is the internal DC-DC power supply so that the case can be
plugged into power away from the host PC. |

The new rear panel uses a Multi-Lane adapter plate. The Multi-Lane
connection uses a single data cable up to two meters long. Shown above is
this optional mounting plate with a standard power cable that plugs into the
host PC for power. |
|
When the internal power supply option is selected, the Multi-Lane adapter
plate will also have a power jack opening and a on-off switch. A separate external
AC power adapter plugs into the power jack which provides the low voltage
power for the drives.

Optional internal DC-DC power supply kit. An external AC-DC power
adapter (not shown) provides low voltage to the system similar to how a
notebook computer is powered. This allows the case to be plugged into power
anywhere without putting a load on the host PC. |
|
The internal DC power supply is very small yet provides up to 120 watts of
power. The power supply bracket attaches to one of the hard drive mounting
plates. A remote switch on the rear panel allow the drives power to be
turned on and off. |

The Multi-Lane connector has four SATA connections on the inside which
connect to each drive. The data from all four drives passes through a single
external data cable.

|
A similar Multi-Lane PCI slot adapter is used on the host PC
where each SATA connection is made to the motherboard or a add-on card.
Note: A Multi-Lane cross-over cable is needed. See this guide to
easily create one from a regular straight through cable:
